Academic Q-Drops
Undergraduate students who decide to drop a class after the 12th class day for academic reasons will need to submit a request using the online Academic Q-drop Request system. This system can be used to submit an academic Q-drop request starting on the 13th class day of the fall or spring semester, and on the 5th class day of summer semester, through the deadline to drop a class for academic reasons. Check the Academic Calendar for specific dates.
Graduate and professional students should speak with their graduate coordinator to drop a course. The online Academic Q-drop Request system is currently not enabled to be used by graduate students or for requesting Q-drops for nonacademic reasons.
Academic Q-drops may be requested due to academic reasons that impact the students ability to complete the course successfully.
The official student record does not delineate between academic and non-academic Q-drops.
What is the difference between an Academic Q-drop and a nonacademic Q-drop?
Academic Q-drops may be requested if the class is too difficult, not challenging enough, if the class is no longer needed, or for other academic reasons.
Nonacademic Q-drops may be requested for reasons such as severe illness, student’s responsibility of a caregiver, death of a family member, and required military service.
If you are dropping a class for one of the reasons listed below and have documentation, do not use this system. Talk with your advisor first about requesting a non-academic Q-drop. See the General Information Catalog policy on nonacademic Q-drops for more information.
- Severe illness
- Caring for a sick or injured person
- Death of a family member
- Military service
How to Request an Undergraduate Academic Q-Drop
Meet with Your Academic Advisor
Meet with your academic advisor in your college or school to:
- Determine if your reason for dropping a class is for academic or nonacademic reasons
- Discuss the impact on progress towards degree and/or course sequence
- Identify other considerations before dropping
- Check if there are additional college or school requirements
Important:
- Students receiving financial aid should consult with the Texas One Stop to discuss potential impact on financial aid
- International students should first consult with Texas Global
- Students receiving veteran education benefits should check in with the Veteran Certification team in the Office of the Registrar
- Student athletes should consult with the Athletic Advising office
- Students who are Texas Exempt or have already met the 6 total drop limits should contact an academic advisor
