Grants
Grants are a form of need-based financial aid that does not need to be repaid. Eligibility is determined by the information you provide on your FAFSA. Grants are awarded by the federal and state governments, as well as by UT.
Federal Grants
Federal Pell Grant: Awarded to undergraduate students with significant financial need.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program: Awarded to undergraduate students with the greatest financial need and helps supplement the Federal Pell Grant.
Pell Grant FAQs
Do I qualify for a Pell Grant?
- The Pell Grant is awarded to undergraduate students who display exceptional financial need and have not earned a degree already.
How do I apply for the Pell Grant?
- In order to apply for the Pell Grant, you will need to complete the FAFSA form for the corresponding year.
How much Pell Grant will I receive?
- Eligibility and annual amounts are determined by Congress and can change from year to year. Many circumstances may impact or change Federal Pell Grant eligibility, including how much you are eligible to receive each semester.
How many hours do I need to take to get a Pell Grant?
- You only need to be enrolled in one (1) hour to be eligible to receive the Pell Grant. The amount of Pell that you would be eligible to receive is prorated based on the amount of hours that you are enrolled in and your estimate cost of attendance. You must be enrolled full time to receive the max amount of Pell eligibility.
When will the Pell Grant disburse?
- The Pell Grant will begin to disburse approximately 10 days before the start of the enrolled term.
Will receiving a summer Pell Grant impact the amount of Pell I can receive next year?
- Receiving Pell over the summer will not impact the amount of Pell that you can receive the following academic year.
Pell Recalculation
Pell Recalculation is the process of reviewing and adjusting Pell Grants for eligible students based on changes in their enrollment during the semester. Any changes to enrollment after the Pell Recalculation date will not affect the Pell Grant amount for that term.
