Maintaining Eligibility
To remain eligible for federal, state and some institutional financial aid, you must comply with UT’s standards for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). All undergraduate and graduate students will be evaluated for SAP annually at the end of the spring semester (or summer semester, if enrolled).
-
Minimum GPA2.0
Undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
Note: Graduate or professional students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 or the minimum GPA standard as defined by your degree program.
-
Minimum Pace67%
All undergraduate and graduate students must successfully complete at least 67% of the credit hours they attempt.
-
Maximum Timeframe150%
Students may attempt no more than 150% of the credit hours required by their degree program.
Note: Law students must meet the minimum standards as set by the UT School of Law’s Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
Failure to Meet SAP Requirements
Financial Aid Suspension
An undergraduate or graduate student who does not meet SAP requirements during the annual review is placed on financial aid suspension. You can regain financial aid eligibility by meeting all SAP evaluated measures or submitting a successful SAP appeal and receiving approval. Taking a semester off or paying for coursework without financial aid will not automatically restore financial aid eligibility.
Appealing Suspension
An appeal process is available for students who have experienced circumstances that affect their ability to meet SAP, including:
- Personal injury or illness.
- Death of a relative.
- Other extenuating circumstances out of the student’s control.
To appeal, you must submit the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Appeal form, which requires attaching a personal statement and supporting documents.
Your personal statement should address:
- What happened?
- What has changed?
- What are your success strategies and how will this ensure success?
If the appeal is approved, you will be placed on a financial aid academic plan. Progress will be monitored each semester to ensure you are either meeting SAP or the conditions of the financial aid academic plan. If the appeal is denied, you will remain ineligible for financial aid until you meet SAP requirements.
For timely review and processing, you are encouraged to submit a SAP appeal by the following deadlines:
