Terry Foundation Scholarship®

The Terry Foundation was established in 1986 by Houstonians Howard Terry (1916-2012) and Nancy Terry (1927-2012) out of a desire to help young people to help themselves. Their desire to invest in Texas students was born of their belief that a university – like the state it represents – is only as good as the educated citizens it produces. The Terry Foundation’s mission is to develop future leaders of Texas through access to education. Terry Scholars are distinguished by a deep rooted desire to enrich the general welfare of the community and an established record of leadership.  Terry Scholars are challenged to achieve their highest potential in SCHOLARSHIP, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE – to their university, the State of Texas, and the world.

Who can apply

The Terry Foundation provides four-year scholarships covering up to the cost of attendance for Texas resident students attending UT Austin and several other universities in the state of Texas. Terry Scholars are selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of incoming freshmen who demonstrate exceptional leadership, character, and scholastic ability. Family income and financial need are also considered. Continuing UT Austin students nor transfer applicants are eligible to apply for the Terry Foundation Scholarship. To be considered for the Terry Foundation Scholarship at The University of Texas at Austin you must:

  • Apply for admission using either the Common App or the ApplyTexas application by December 1. There are required Terry Foundation Scholarship-specific questions on the Scholarship Interest Form available through MyStatus; the deadline to submit the scholarship interest form is one week after the admissions deadline
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 15. (Application available December 2023). The FAFSA will determine your eligibility and is REQUIRED for all Terry Foundation Candidates.

Potential Terry Candidates

If you are selected by The University of Texas at Austin as a potential Terry candidate, you will be contacted by the UT Austin Office of Admissions to submit additional information, such as recommendation letters. Terry Scholarship Candidates are recommended to the Foundation by UT Austin. Candidates must attend a personal interview with the Terry Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee. The Terry Foundation selects the scholarship recipients from among the candidates who are recommended for interview.

Other universities which are also affiliated with the Terry Scholarship program may have different application procedures. Please contact each individual school for specific instructions.
